Half of retirees happy to work longer

NEARLY half of Scots planning to retire this year are willing to work for longer to guarantee a higher income when they do retire, according to research out today.

Those who would consider working beyond retirement would be happy to do so for between two and ten more years, Prudential's Class of 2010 retirement survey found.

Across the UK as a whole fewer than a fifth of workers retiring this year believe they have saved enough to secure a comfortable retirement.

A further 21 per cent refuse to continue working past their statutory retirement age even if it means struggling financially. Working an extra five years from 65 and paying 100 a month into a 100,000 pension could boost retirement savings by an extra 53,000, said the Pru.
