Price hike sees thousands switch

The recent news that ScottishPower is to raise its domestic energy prices in August has sparked a surge in the number of households switching supplier.

Price comparison site energyhelpline.com has reported a 400 per cent rise in the last week in the number of people switching supplier, in response to ScottishPower's gas and electricity price increases of 19 and 10 per cent respectively.

It claimed users changing tariff or supplier had saved a total of 108 million and predicted that more households would follow suit as further rises are unveiled.

Of those switching last week, 84 per cent moved to fixed and capped tariffs for protection from future price hikes.
