Welsh back Scottish union's milk price plans

The Scottish NFU initiative aimed at providing stability and sustainability in the farm gate price of milk received a boost yesterday with support coming from the Farmers' Union of Wales.

Following a meeting with Scottish Union representatives FUW dairy committee chairman Eifion Huws said his union welcomed the work and enthusiasm put into the initiative by NFU Scotland.

He added they fully recognised that the proposal, which uses two established formula for setting a price that was fair and transparent, was a starting point for further discussions.

It was felt that the FUW should support it as a move towards greater transparency and a means by which to break the cycle of rhetoric and action that has dominated dairy politics for decades.

Last week, following a series of round-Scotland meetings, James Withers, NFU Scotland's chief executive, pictured left, underlined the importance of getting support for the proposal from milk producers all over the UK.
