9am briefing: Family treated in hospital after blaze

A FAMILY-of-four had to be treated in hospital after fire took hold in the living room of their Grange home.

The blaze began when an incense stick fell and set light to furniture in the Esdaile Park flat at around 10.45pm last night.

The couple and their two male children escaped and were treated at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for smoke inhalation.

The father had to be restrained from returning to the property.

The mother, who asked not to be named, said: "I am still shaking this morning."

Motorist killed after lorry smash

A MAN killed in a road smash on an Aberdeenshire road has been named as 37-year-old Kestutis Senkus from Edinburgh.

The Lithuanian national's Volkswagen Golf and a lorry collided on the B9170 between Barra Castle and Tillycairn, near Oldmeldrum shortly after 2pm on Wednesday.

College merger plans confirmed

EDINBURGH College of Art's board has backed plans to merge with Edinburgh University.

The merger, which could happen by 2012, comes amid fears of impending cuts. Edinburgh University will now decide whether to support the plan.
