9am Briefing: Stabbings leave one man dead and another in hospital

TWO alleged stabbings over the weekend have left one man dead and another in a serious condition in hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a young man was stabbed in Stockbridge yesterday evening.

The 25-year-old was near Pizza Hut in Raeburn Place when he was attacked by a man, who then ran off southwards in Dean Park Street.

Police are treating the incident as attempted murder and appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Livingston welder Jim Tierney, 27, whose body was found in the back garden of a property in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 22-year-old is scheduled to appear at Livingston Sheriff Court today.

• SCOTTISH soldiers have been banned from finishing a charity cycle trip at Edinburgh Castle because of health and safety rules.

The squad of six are due to complete a gruelling 1750-mile trip by bike from Italy to Scotland today.

But they have been forced to abandon the original plan to cycle all the way to the Army HQ inside Edinburgh Castle in case they have an accident.

Major Frank Morton, of the Royal Regiment of Scotland Association, blasted the decision as "unbelievable".

For the Westminster election last May around 200,000 was paid out to executives to declare results.

The costs are expected to rise this year as additional payments have been assigned for supervising the UK-wide referendum on alternative voting.

• A MAN has been taken to the ERI after his vehicle left the road and collided with a telegraph pole in Midlothian this morning.

Fire crews rushed to the scene of the incident on the A7 near the village of Middleton, south of Gorebridge, around 5.30am and freed the 42-year-old, who was conscious and breathing.
