Alarm at Scots deaths from malnutrition

Malnutrition was a factor in the deaths of more than 450 Scots in the past five years, according to new figures.

NHS statistics have revealed that the number of people dying from malnutrition has remained relatively steady since 2005.

There were 15 deaths in hospitals in Scotland last year, with a further 67 cases where the condition was a contributory factor. This compares with 14 deaths due to malnutrition and 81 contributory cases five years ago.

The 2009 figures show the over-75s were the most susceptible and Greater Glasgow and Clyde was the area where the greatest number of deaths by malnutrition occurred. The statistics were released by the Liberal Democrats, who called for action from ministers.

Health spokesman Ross Finnie said: "It is alarming that anyone in Scotland is dying of malnutrition in this day and age. Ministers must investigate this issue as a matter of urgency."
