Alexander to front AV bid

SHADOW Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander will front the Scottish campaign to change the voting system for Westminster elections.

The MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South is one of 14 leading Labour MPs to declare support for the Alternative Vote system which will mean no-one can be elected to Westminster on less than 50 per cent of the vote. Mr Alexander, who took 60 per cent of the vote in his constituency last year, has followed his party leader Ed Miliband in throwing his weight behind AV along with the Lib Dems.

However, some Scottish Labour colleagues have made clear they will campaign against it.

Mr Alexander said: "This is a small but important change that will make politicians more accountable to the people who elect them."
