Easter Bunny caught in speed blitz

A MOTORCYCLIST wearing an Easter Bunny costume was among 73 people caught speeding in Lothian and Borders during a weekend crackdown by police.

The 20-year-old motorcyclist was caught travelling at 63mph in a 40mph speed limit in the Broxburn area of West Lothian on Easter Sunday.

Although wearing the bunny costume, he was wearing a crash helmet rather than the rabbit head-dress. Officers found he had only passed his motorcycle test three weeks earlier.

The blitz against speeding motorists was carried out between Friday and Sunday, with two people also reported for dangerous driving and four people reported for careless driving.

Chief Superintendent Charlie Common from Lothian and Borders Police who is the ACPOS lead on Casualty Reduction said: "Following a coordinated weekend of action by police officers across all eight Scottish forces, I have to report that far too many drivers and motorcyclists are still risking their lives, the lives of their passengers and other road users by continuing to travel at excessive speed. It is disappointing to report on the number of offences detected over the weekend.

"With 651 drivers being reported for speeding, 20 for dangerous driving and a further 24 for careless driving, the figures are totally unacceptable.

"The weekend's results show that there is still much work to be done. Speed is a major cause of serious road accidents and we cannot ignore what campaigns of this nature reveal.

We will continue to focus our attentions on those who choose to drive in such a manner."
