Fire-raiser 'was attention seeking'

A MAN who turned on the gas supply then set fire to his former girlfriend's living room was "attention seeking" and not insane, a court was told yesterday.

Paul Hines, 48, was remanded in custody at Livingston Sheriff Court after a sheriff ruled that he presented a danger to the public.

Hines, from Livingston, earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting Angela Downie to her injury in her home in Broxburn on February 18.

He admitted gagging Ms Downie, pressing a cushion over her mouth and brandishing a knife. He also pleaded guilty to culpable and reckless conduct by setting fire to things in her living room after turning on the gas supply on March 7 and 8.

Sheriff Grahame Fleming QC said: "The accused is at risk of committing further offences."
