Ms Nash said it was an "amazing privilege" to be elected, after winning the seat with a majority of 12,408.

She added: "It is an amazing privilege to be elected as the MP for the area I grew up in and to be Scotland's youngest MP."

Mr Gray said: "John Reid is undoubtedly a difficult act to follow, but I know that Pamela Nash is more than up to the job."

He added: "I have no doubt that she has a big future in Scottish politics and I look forward to following her success."
