Go batty for canal survey

BRITISH Waterways is encouraging people to spot and record bats around the Union Canal.

The UK's only flying mammal is the focus of British Waterways' annual Wildlife Survey which launched yesterday.

Bat numbers have declined since the 1950s with the loss of their natural habitat and food source, insects.

Olivia Lassiere, heritage and environment manager for British Waterways Scotland, said: "We want the Wildlife Survey to highlight the decline but also, hopefully, challenge some of the strange misconceptions we have about bats."
