Hostel wins top environmental accolade

AN eco-makeover has helped Arran's flagship youth hostel win a top green tourism accolade.

The hostel at Lochranza, which reopened last year after a 500,000 refurbishment, has been named the winner of the prestigious Green Tourism Business (GTB) Goldstar Award 2011.

The site is now one of the UK's top ten greenest businesses with improved facilities for the growing hostelling market which is benefiting from the "staycation" movement.

Steve Freear, the hostel manager, said: "Respect for the environment has been part of the ethos of hostelling long before the term 'green' was invented, so we continually promote and support recycling, waste minimisation and use of public transport in the youth hostel community."
