Japan honours city's Mr Judo

SCOTLAND'S "Mr Judo" has been awarded one of Japan's highest honours in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of judo.

George Kerr, 73, has been practising the martial art since he was eight years old, and once taught Mick Jagger. The Japanese government recently announced that it had conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette on Mr Kerr.

The award ceremony took place yesterday in Edinburgh at the official residence of Consul General, Masataka Tarahara. Mr Kerr, from Leith, was made a CBE in the New Year's Honours List for services to the sport.
