Local news: Youngsters 'should train to save lives'

Lothians youngsters should learn how to save a life, says a heart charity.

The British Heart Foundation in Edinburgh said most children would want to help someone who had collapsed on the street, but the majority did not have the skills.

The charity has urged education authorities to consider introducing more training, and beginning it at a younger age. Ben McKendrick, of BHF Scotland, said: "Emergency life support training will save lives."

Chance for 500 funding

PARENTS, teachers and fellow pupils queued up for hair and beauty treatments from S3 hairdressing students at Newbattle Community High School.

The 14 pupils on the two-year Skills for Work vocational course offered bargain washes and blow-dries and facials and manicures.

Chilean singer gets meaningful

Chilean singer-songwriter Carlos Arredondo will present a performance of "Songs With Meanings" at the Eric Liddell Centre in Morningside Road on Friday.

The event, which begins at 7.30pm, is part of The Smallest Latin American Festival in The World. Tickets 5 on the door.

Lunch on menu for St Columba's fundraiser

St Columba's Hospice is to benefit from a fundraising lunch in memory of a former patient.

Friends and colleagues of Jenny McLean, who worked at the General Teaching Council and was cared for at the hospice before her death, will host The Golden Heart Lunch at the Best Western Capital Hotel on Clermiston Road on June 25.

Charity night to help out cancer centre

A CHARITY evening in aid of a Maggie's cancer care centre at the Western General Hospital will take place tonight.

The event, which will feature a disco, games and a buffet, has been organised by Cheryl Couper, who is 30 today.

Miss Couper, a nursery nurse from Gorgie, received treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma at the Western General Hospital.

The event takes place at the City Cafe on Blair Street at 7.30pm.
