Lung cancer: What to watch out for

The main cause of lung cancer is smoking, but 10 per cent of sufferers have never smoked. Early diagnosis is vital, and anyone with concerns is urged to see a doctor immediately.

The main signs and symptoms are:

• A cough that does not go away after two or three weeks.

• Worsening or change to long-standing cough.

• Repeated chest infections.

• Coughing up blood.

• Unexplained persistent breathlessness.

• Unexplained persistent tiredness.

• Unexplained persistent weight loss.

• Persistent chest and/or shoulder pain.
