MSPs to pick 'local heroes'

MSPs have been asked to nominate "local heroes" to take part in the "riding" down the Royal Mile on the day the Queen visits for the opening of the fourth session of the Scottish Parliament.

The 129 politicians are being asked to put forward someone from their constituency or region who has made an important contribution to the lives of other people.

The local heroes will walk alongside 1500 other prominent Scots, schoolchildren, parliamentarians, religious leaders and guests from public life as part of the activities on Friday, July 1, to mark the parliament's new session.

The Queen is due to address the newly-elected MSPs and guests in the chamber ahead of the riding. In the afternoon, the parliament will open its doors to the public.
