New street sign charges

CITY chiefs are to start charging developers for the cost of providing street signs and numbering doors.

The council currently provides the service free but the new charges are expected to bring in around 23,000 a year.

Numbering new properties will cost 40 for one new property, 80 for up to five and up to 750 for 101 or more.

The street signs will cost 150 to fix onto a wall or 200 if free-standing.

Dave Anderson, director of the city council's city development department, said: "The statutory addressing service currently attracts both internal and external costs to the council. The introduction of charging for aspects of the service would recover some of these direct costs. The charging will be initiated once financial systems are in place."
