As storms continued to batter the UK and more flood alerts were issued, chancellor George Osborne warned that the economy still has a long way to go before reaching calmer waters.

Mr Osborne said that substantial cuts to benefits would be required to balance the nation’s books, with the welfare budget alone set to be trimmed by £12 billion.

He also suggested that under-25s and those earning more than £65,000 would not be eligible for housing benefit.
