High head count

The World Congress of Fertility and Sterility being told of the great benefits of IVF to mankind (your report, 14 September) is rather like a motor trade conference highlighting the great benefits of car usage.

If Britain is to have any hope of getting its finances back in balance this kind of vanity expenditure by the NHS will have to be drastically curbed.

Of course people who see a baby as a "must have" accessory will squeal, as will those who use up astronomical amounts of public funds pandering to them.

Our MPs are supposed to control this kind of rampant empire building and job creation in the public services, but run scared of lifting the lid on the NHS, the biggest money sink of the lot.
