Letter: Issues of Trust

I was entertained by the report contrasting the sickness of the National Trust for Scotland with the health of the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe (your report, 10 August).

Those who would build a new self-financing engine for the trust should be mindful of the precepts of Donald Schon. I was exhilarated by his Reith Lectures in 1970 and immediately put some of his ideas into practice when contracted to get the Festival Fringe Society out of the red and designed for survival.

My version of his learning system constantly feeds back upon feedback and always washes its face. George Reid is wrong to suppose that a new tiny few can sort out the mess of an old tiny few. It was leaving hordes of ruling council and staff out of the loop that flew in the face of Schon's wisdom.
