Letter: Military state?
Have we been wrong in assuming that the British state had abandoned gunboat diplomacy?

I support the removal of the Royal Marines from Scottish bases (your report, 3 June). Scotland should have its own armed forces paid for out of its own taxes.
Their combined motto should be "It's our oil."

Hide AdThe Royal Marines is one of the oldest units and pre-dates the Union. In 1707 England's Royal Navy numbered about 240 ships, requiring Royal Marines to maintain order.
Scotland's navy numbered three ships (some say six) necessitating no marines. The Royal Marines should return to their homeland and Scotland should start a new force to man the aircraft(less) carrier it is building.
