Salmond’s realm

Alex Salmond says that an independent Scotland “will continue to share Her Majesty the Queen as head of state”.

The only way this can come about is if Scotland becomes the 17th member of the Commonwealth realms, those sovereign states within the Commonwealth that have the Queen as their monarch and head of state.

As such, Scotland, with a population about the same as Papua New Guinea, would be listed between Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Solomon Islands and be called “The Monarchy of Scotland”.

The Queen is likely to remain based in England, however.
