Stub out smoking

IT IS very encouraging to read (your report, 8 February) of the significant drop in young smokers in Scotland – down to 22 per cent, the lowest level ever recorded, which reflects the success of the various educational advertising and legislation moves to curb this very damaging and addictive drug.

The time is now right for an extension of the smoking ban to include beaches, public places and parks etc, in line with other countries, to further reduce the effects of passive smoking and to clean up our public places from the distasteful sight of discarded cigarettes.
