Pipe band welcome for hero's return

Sergeant Gary Jamieson from the Scots Guards stepped on an unidentified IED while navigating a safe route around marked IEDs. He lost his legs and his left arm. His quick-thinking colleagues applied tourniquets to stem the bleeding, which saved his life and his right arm.

Residents in Sgt Jamieson's home village of Stonehouse in Lanarkshire held a welcome parade on his release from hospital.

He said: "I was told there was a barbecue and I was trying to surprise them by walking in but obviously I got surprised first by a pipe band round the corner."

His mother-in-law Margaret McInnes, who helped organise the event, said: "I don't know of any soldier who has survived after such severe injuries never mind going on in his career to help others. He is one-in-a-million and deserves a hero's welcome."
