Respected former teacher appointed to council post

A FORMER teacher has been appointed depute chief executive of West Lothian Council.

Moira Niven, who was previously the council's head of service - schools with education support, took up her post last week following the retirement of Gordon Ford.

She has responsibility for the council's education, planning and area services.

Ms Niven, who has more than 34 years of experience in education, began her teaching career as a business studies teacher at James Gillespie's High in Edinburgh in 1977.

She moved to Balerno High in 1983 as principal teacher for business studies and in 1989 was appointed acting assistant headteacher at Balerno.

Ms Niven joined West Lothian Council in November 1995 when she took up her post as a head of service for education.

She was awarded an MBE for services to education in 2010.
