Road closure causes long delays for Torness staff

MORE than 40 workers at Torness nuclear power station were unable to access the site yesterday morning as police cordoned off a 13-mile stretch of road following the crash on the A1.

The incident, which happened at around 12:30am yesterday, left workers travelling south from Haddington unable to access the road outside the power station, while hundreds of other commuters were diverted to the A68 southbound and the A6112 and A697 northbound through Duns and Greenlaw.

Torness plant manager Paul Forrest said night-shift workers unable to leave the plant had helped to keep the operation running.

"Even though staff travelling in from the north were significantly delayed, staff coming in from the south were still able to access the site and assume normal duties," he said.

The crash caused long tailbacks on the A1, with major traffic disruption reported in the eastern Borders.

The road reopened at around 1pm.
