Rose Street to get royal makeover

THE city's Rose Street is set for a royal revamp after Prince Charles' architecture charity was commissioned to redesign the "unloved" thoroughfare.

Rose Street, known for its raucous rugby fans and 17-pub crawl challenge, has been identified as a priority after the city centre was slated by design gurus Gehl in a recent study.

The overhaul by the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment will see Rose Street host regular street markets and festival events, as well as being transformed by new floral and lighting displays.

Denzil Skinner, chairman of the Essential Edinburgh business group, said: "We want to work with businesses in the area to organise special events and festivals to help bring people in."

A spokeswoman for the foundation said: "Our aim is simply to help make the street more pleasant and attractive, to make it feel more loved and get closure to realising its potential."
