Shake-up in handling of police complaints

NEW minimum standards for the way police forces handle complaints made against them will be recommended today.

A report by Professor John McNeill, the Police Complaints Commissioner for Scotland, will lay out a package of measures including "far-reaching" changes that could see complaints sub-committee meetings open to the public and police publishing their procedures for handling complaints.

The report follows an audit by the Police Complaints Commission Scotland, which looked at how police boards hold chief constables to account in terms of recording complaints.

Prof McNeill said: "The recommendations are an important part of a process that will bring about a minimum standard in complaint handling and oversight by police boards across Scotland."
