Spirit of Hallowe'en a blessing for stores

THE custom of celebrating Hallowe'en is alive and well in Britain, according to a survey published yesterday.

More than 40 per cent of people questioned revealed that they have prepared for Hallowe'en by purchasing sweets for guisers.

Figures show that two in five British people have purchased sweets and chocolates ready for the sound of the doorbell tonight.

Meanwhile, the tradition of dressing up has led to another supermarket boom. Homemade disguises are out, with ready to wear costumes increasing in popularity.

Supermarket sales of costumes, party accessories and themed foods are expected to exceed 10 million this year. But at the other end of the scale, nearly a fifth of the population won't be taking part in the celebrations.

A YouGov questionnaire for Sainsbury's showed that 16 per cent of those questioned admitted they will be dimming the lights tonight and won't answer the door.
