UK news: Cameron warned over emission targets

THE Prime Minister must accept ambitious targets to cut emissions in the 2020s if he is to live up to his pledge to lead the "greenest government ever", an influential coalition urged today.

Campaigners warned the PM his administration was in danger of losing its way on environmental policy.

Eurovision hopes high

BOYBAND Blue and twin duo Jedward are among the favourites to make their countries proud in tonight's Eurovision final. Blue will represent the UK with their track I Can and the Irish twins will perform their song Lipstick at the annual contest in Germany. Britain came last in last year's competition.

Country's duty to forces heads for statute book

THE Government is expected to announce shortly that it is putting the military covenant on a statutory basis for the first time.

Prime Minister David Cameron has faced claims he was watering down his commitment to write into law the state's duty of care to armed forces personnel.

Legislation being debated by Parliament stops short of giving the covenant formal legal status but has been delayed, with an amendment to it tabled.

Friday meat ban returns

CATHOLICS have been urged to observe the ancient practice of not eating meat on Fridays. The custom of abstaining from meat as an act of penance for the death of Christ will be re-established from September 16 - the first anniversary of Pope Benedict's visit to Britain. The Vatican says the papal visit created "a fresh expression of self-confidence and identity amongst Catholics".

Grant backing injunctions

ACTOR Hugh Grant has backed the use of injunctions to protect the private lives of celebrities. He said privacy was a basic human right and should not be removed "just because you've had a bit of success". He said the press had "been completely out of control for the last 20 years".

MANCHESTER: Vandals used a portable saw to cut down a CCTV camera pole which was positioned to capture anti-social behaviour on a housing estate. Police have released footage taken from the camera seconds before it was cut down in Swinton, Greater Manchester.

BRADFORD: Two women were being questioned today in connection with the deaths of two men whose bodies were found by a roadside with head injuries. Shahbzada Muhammed Imran, 27, of Bradford, and Ahmedin Sayed Khyel, 35, of London, were found dead in Bradford on Tuesday night.
