UK news: Countries stripped of millions as aid slashed

SIXTEEN countries including Angola, Kosovo, Bosnia and Vietnam will no longer receive aid from Britain, the government was expected to announce today.

The countries could be stripped of millions, following an inquiry ordered by International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell.

Dementia timebomb ticks

THE number of people with undiagnosed dementia is set to double to almost 600,000 in 2021, according to a new report.

The Alzheimer's Society said just over 300,000 people are undiagnosed at the moment.

More than a million people are expected to have the condition by 2021.

Supermarkets told to find home for booze

SUPERMARKETS should stop displaying alcohol next to everyday items such as bread and milk, health campaigners have said.

Stores are "overflowing" with discounted booze, according to Alcohol Concern, which is urging supermarkets and off-licences to display drink in only one part of shops.

Research for the charity in December found supermarkets including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda placing alcohol displays throughout their stores.

Airline in fresh strike poll

BRITISH Airways cabin crew are voting in a new strike ballot over their long-running dispute with the airline, which threatens fresh industrial action in the run-up to Easter.

It will be the fourth ballot in the past two years in a bitter row that started over cost-cutting but now centres on travel concessions taken away from staff, as well as disciplinary action taken against Unite members.

Eminem makes headlines

EMINEM and Arctic Monkeys will headline this year's V Festival.

The US rapper will share top billing with the Sheffield indie rockers at the festival, which runs across two days on two sites in Essex and Staffordshire on August 20 and 21.

Hampshire: Millions of Vodafone customers in southern England lost services when burglars smashed their way into a building and stole vital network equipment. The raiders entered the building and took or damaged the network and IT hardware, causing services to crash.

London: Police said there had been "a good response" to an appeal broadcast on the BBC's Crimewatch that recreated the murder of an aspiring teacher who was stabbed to death in the street. Police aimed to jog witnesses' memories through the reconstruction of Samuel Guidera's final moments.
