UK News: Middle classes are not aware of scale of cuts

THE middle classes still do not understand the scale of the Government spending cuts about to hit them, Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke said today.

He warned that the coalition was going to face "some political difficulty" as people began to grasp just how hard they would be hit.

239m on swine flu jab

THE Government spent 239 million on swine flu vaccine.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) ordered the Department of Health to release the data after it failed to comply with a freedom of information request.

The department confirmed it had spent 239m on the jab up in April 2010.

Armed robber shot dead by police named

A WANTED man shot dead by police investigating a series of armed robberies has been named by sources.

Officers opened fire on Michael Fitzpatrick, believed to be in his 40s, in Brighton, just after 1pm yesterday.

A firearm, believed to be a black handgun not used by police, was found by his body in Rock Place in the Kemptown area.

It is being examined to find out whether it is real or imitation and whether or not it had been fired.

Stricter rules for online ads

COMPANIES who advertise on the internet will face stricter rules from next month.

Until now, The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has only been able to monitor traditional advertising found on billboards, in newspapers or on television.

But from March 1, it will also regulate commercial websites and businesses who promote their products using social networking platforms.

The singer will perform on the main Pyramid Stage with a 90-minute show to round off this summer's event on Sunday, June 26, she has announced.

Birmingham: A city council has revealed plans to cut thousands of jobs in a bid to save more than 300 million. Council leader Mike Whitby said the authority would "play its role" in helping to tackle the national deficit, and planned to make the savings over the next three to four years.

Newport: A former soldier being held on suspicion of murdering teenage mother-to-be Nikitta Grender remained in custody today after detectives were given extra time to question him. Police now have until tomorrow morning to either charge or release Carl Whant, 26.
