UK's top designers pay tribute to Harris tweed

FOR a century the famous Harris Tweed orb mark has symbolised the quality of the famous fabric produced in the Scottish islands.

Next month, some of the UK's leading designers will help mark the centenary with contributions to a fashion show which aims to showcase the iconic material.

Vivienne Westwood, Henry Holland, Ben Sherman and a string of Scottish designers including Deryck Walker, who won designer of the year in 2008 and 2009 at the Scottish style awards, will send designs for the show, being held in An Lanntair Art Centre, Stornoway on 12 March.

Judy R Clark, who was shortlisted designer of the year at the awards and Iona Crawford and Joyce Paton will also take part in the event, organised by the Harris Tweed Authority.

Lorna Macaulay, the organisation's chief executive, said: "This unique occasion will help to acknowledge the skill and support of the local community which this extraordinary cloth has enjoyed for over 100 years.

"The resurgence of the fabric as a contemporary cloth which features within the collections of so many high-profile designers is amazing."

She added: "Who would have thought that 100 years on, this traditional fabric would have developed such a 'sexy' image and be appearing on some of the most famous catwalks around the world.

"It has also played a major role in building the profile of our island and for the skill of our weavers internationally."

Judy R Clark said: "It's fantastic to be part of such a prestigious show on the island, especially one that represents such unique heritage. Harris Tweed has such diversity - it's a beautiful fabric to work with."
