Union warns teachers in Scotland are under attack

The leader of a UK teaching organisation has warned the profession in Scotland faces attack from the Scottish Government.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, said Scotland had previously led the way in the UK for teachers' pay and conditions and training.

But, ahead of the UK union's conference in Glasgow this weekend, she said it was now the region being attacked first.

She added: "Too many strands of English strategy are coming through in the election manifestos in Scotland. Teachers don't even want these in England."

A motion against the pay deal offered to teachers by council employers in Scotland is expected to be discussed on Saturday.
