Woman dies after falling from cliff on Skye

A 48-year-old woman out walking with her husband plunged nearly 100 feet to her death on the Isle of Skye.

The couple were walking at Neist Point - a popular and spectacular tourist spot - when the woman went over the edge.

Her distraught husband raised the alarm.

Stornoway Coastguard search and rescue helicopter was launched at 4pm on Saturday and recovered her body from the cliffs below.

Dunvegan Coastguard Team also attended the tragedy. It is not known at this stage if the woman and her husband were tourists.

A spokesman for Stornoway Coastguard said the matter was now subject to a police investigation.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed that a 48-year-old woman had died following the fall.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal. There are no further details at this stage. Next of kin are being informed.”

Neist is the most Westerly point on Skye, giving excellent views over Moonen Bay to Waterstein Head and out over the Minch to the Western Isles.

Neist Point is renowned for its rock formations, which are closely akin to those at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. It is said that the causeway extends under the sea from Northern Ireland to the Isle of Skye.
