Ukrainian teenagers injured in 'racially aggravated attack' in Edinburgh

The boys, two aged 13 and one 15, were assaulted by a gang of eight youths on Sunday evening as they walked towards a bus stop in the Niddrie area of the city.

Two of the gang, dressed in dark clothing, assaulted one of the 13-year-olds, leaving him with a cut to his ear. The 15-year-old was punched and the 13-year-old was stabbed by two other members of the group, who ran off following the incident.

The injured boys were taken to hospital and the incident was reported to police.

Officers say they are treating the incident as racially aggravated. Police are reviewing CCTV footage in the area around Niddrie Mains Road, where the attack took place around 8:30pm.

Detective Inspector Keith Fairbairn said: “I know there were members of the public in the area at the time of the attack and I am asking them to contact us with any information they may have.

"We are appealing for details on the group of youths, who were dressed in dark clothing, perhaps you saw them somewhere else, did you see them running off, any small piece of information could assist us in identifying those responsible for these attacks.”

Thousands of Ukrainians have moved to Scotland as refugees since the invasion of their country by Russia in February last year.
