Adlington woe but GB team excels

Great Britain picked up five more medals at the European Swimming Championships in Budapest yesterday, but there was crushing disappointment for Rebecca Adlington.

Gemma Spofforth and Lizzie Simmonds claimed their second one-two of the week in the 100 metres backstroke, albeit with the order reversed, Liam Tancock was second in the 50m backstroke, Scotland's Hannah Miley added the 200m individual medley bronze medal to her 400m title and the women's 4x200m freestyle relay team finished third.

Adlington finished seventh in the 800m freestyle, more than four seconds behind the winner, world champion Lotte Friis, with Irish teenager Grainne Murphy edged out of the medals on the final touch by double world champion Federica Pellegrini.

Garoch's again produced a superb breaststroke leg and from fourth at the final turn, Miley overhauled Camille Muffat to touch in 2:10.89 behind a home one-two of Katinka Hosszu and Evelyn Verraszto.
