After scoring in opener, Hibs ace wants more

LIAM MILLER is determined to add more goals to his game after hitting Hibs' crucial third goal against Motherwell last weekend.

The Irish midfielder was part of the side which engineered a 3-2 win over Craig Brown's men at Fir Park and was responsible for securing the points with a peach of an effort in the second half.

The player scored just two goals throughout the whole of last season and was clearly delighted to break his duck so early in this campaign, getting himself booked for diving into the crowd in celebration after the strike.

However, while keen to boost his tally further this term, he insists he's just as happy setting others up.

He said: "I think that it was more momentum that took me into the crowd more than anything else.

"I don't usually score many goals, so it was nice to get my name on the scoresheet as well - although I admit that I maybe overdid it on the celebrations!

"I just joined in with the fans when I ended up in the crowd, there's nothing else you can do at that point and it was nice.

"It would be nice to get a few more goals to my name this season.

"I know I can score more than I have done in the last few seasons so I would be happy if a few more go in the back of the net.

"Anthony Stokes scored a lot of goals for us last season and he got off to a good start with another one against Motherwell, Paul Hanlon scored as well, which he'll be pleased with.

"Deeks didn't score but he set up all three goals and I think that, all in all, he had a great game.

"I don't think he will mind so much whether he is setting them up or scoring them, just as long as he is involved and that is the same for me. It's always nice to get off the mark, especially so early in the season. I was quite pleased with the goal, obviously the result was the most important thing, so we were all really happy at the end of the 90 minutes.

"Just as long as we keep winning, I don't really care who scores the goals."

As well as bagging his first goal, Miller was delighted to help Hibs get their SPL campaign off to a winning start.

However, he admitted that Motherwell's second goal - which came just two minutes after Miller had put Hibs 3-1 ahead - had sparked flashbacks to the incredible 6-6 draw on their last visit to Lanarkshire.

Back in May, Hibs had racked up what looked to be a unassailable 6-2 lead, only to lose four goals in the final 23 minutes of the match and be forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

This time around they did enough to keep Well at bay and Miller added: "When we got it to 3-1 we just wanted to make sure that we kept the points this time but when they brought it back to 3-2 so quickly, I think that the last game at Fir Park must have gone through everyone's mind.

"They scored straight away after our third goal, but I thought that we were the better side in the second half. It was great to come away with the three points and I think everyone was pleased with the fact that we put in a lot better performance in the second half at Fir Park as well. We didn't exactly come out of the traps flying in the first half but there was a big improvement after the break and I think that, overall, we deserved to win the match.

"Obviously, it's only the first game of the season and it is still very early days in terms of the league but it's always great to get off to a winning start and now we will just concentrate on trying to put together a bit of a run.

"Hopefully, if we can do that, we'll be doing everything we can to make sure that we don't let it slip away around about Christmas time like we did last year. There's still a long way to go even until Christmas so we'll take it one game at a time and try to get as many points on the board as we possibly can.

"At different stages in the game you would probably have said that it could have gone either way but, as the second half went on, I think it showed that we were the team looking to win it.

"When they came back to 3-2, the team showed a lot of character and we defended really well."

This weekend, Hibs play host to Rangers in a game that will mark the opening of the new East Stand at Easter Road and Miller is keen to make it a day to remember for the players and supporters. However, he conceded that the SPL champions will make it difficult for them, no matter the occasion: "It is going to be a really tough game, they are the champions and they will make it hard for us, but it is a game we are all looking forward to.

"We will give it a good go and hopefully get the right result.

"The fans will be great, they always are, and I am sure that the new stand opening will make a huge difference.

"It would be nice to get a win over Rangers to build on last weekend's result."
