Boxing: Craigmillar ace Easton faces tricky test against Susans

One of the most intriguing Scottish amateur boxing semi-finals at Coatbridge this evening will be the 64kg clash between Craigmillar's reigning Scottish light-welterweight champion Jason Easton and in-form Dunfermline southpaw Callum Susans.

Susans was in terrific form in beating a Cypriot last month and also seeing off Edinburgh's Martyn Warner 9-0 in the prelims. The pair are one win apiece against each other but Dunfermline club coach Tommy Cannon is confident Susans will brush Easton aside and grab a place in the final on March 25.

He said: "What will make Jason so dangerous this time around to Easton is that when they previously fought, Susans was averaging 14 bouts a season but this time he has fought less than ten bouts and is therefore so much fresher and sharper."

The eastern boxer wth arguably the biggest mountain to climb at The Time Capsule is Lochend featherweight Steven Tiffney, who faces Joe Ham, the multiple title-winner from the Gorbals in Glasgow.

Tiffney's Lochend clubmate David Dickson will box in the other 56kg semi tonight against Linwood's Brett Parker.

Lochend heavyweight Stevie Nichol faces relative unknown Gordon Woods from the Doon Valley club and, should he defeat the Ayrshire boxer, he will clash in an all-east final with Kirkcaldy Kingdom club's Kevin Bruce, who received a bye to the final on March 25 after Holyrood's David Smiley withdrew from the semis.

n HOLYROOD lightweight Louise Mitchell must now wait until March 25 to see if she can become the very first Edinburgh female boxer to win a Scottish title after her 60kg finals bout with Aberdonian Katie Atkin of the Granite City club was switched from tonight's semis bill to the finals day at Coatbridge.
