Boxing: Tommy tops bill

MIDLOTHIAN amateur boxing club will stage a show featuring some top local fighters at Danderhall Miner's Club on Sunday at 1pm, writes BRIAN DONALD.

An Eastern Scottish boxing select will take on a squad from London and Cumbria.

Midlothian club coach Ally Quilleti revealed: "We are featuring an eastern Scotland club team against boxers from the London-based St Pancras and the Cumbrian Whitehaven and Northside clubs in a ten-bout show."

Top of the bill will be Lochend welterweight Tommy Philbin, who fights Adam Little of the Northside club while, in a female bout, Midlothian light-welterweight Louise Mitchell will go head-to-head with Londoner Kristin Witt. Admission on the door will be 12.

Meanwhile, four local eastern boxers have been chosen to box for Scotland in the British Schoolboys and Youth championships at Kirkcaldy on 14 May when they will face the cream of English and Welsh youth boxers.

In the 1997 age class, light-flyweights Joe Murray from Craigmillar and Midlothian's Barry Hogg will be joined in seeking British title glory by 1996-class light-flyweights Liam Tervit of Lochend and Midlothian's Scott Brown.
