Currie 40 - 20 Watsonians: Captain Cairns urges Currie to capitalise on winning momentum

Currie captain Mark Cairns saw glimpses of what his side are capable of in the win over Watsonians on Saturday and now he wants them to take that form into their next three matches before the top league splits into two.

The match at Malleny Park had everything to warm supporters up on a cold October afternoon. From well-worked tries to red cards, they saw it all in 80 minutes of exciting end-to-end rugby.

The hosts never really looked in danger of losing the match after they took a 25-6 lead into the break, although fair play to bottom side Watsonians, who fought back to 25-20 down thanks to the promptings of talented teenage stand-off Jamie Forbes.

However, Currie pulled away in the closing stages and Cairns, the outstanding player on the pitch, said: "We are pleased with the win and know that if we can put together the good play that we showed in longer spells then we are a match for anyone in the division."

The game was fairly evenly matched in the first half until just before the half-hour mark when visiting winger Doug Brown was sent to the sidelines for 10 minutes for not using his arms in a tackle.

In the next 10 minutes, Currie scored two tries to give themselves a comfortable 19-point cushion heading into the second period of the match. After the break discipline became an issue for both sides - Watsonians scrum-half Mike Ker and then Currie replacement Stu Simonsen spending time in the sin-bin.

Ker was then red-carded for a second yellow just before the hour mark, but his side dug in with 14 men until two late tries by winger Dougie Fife saw Currie home.

For Currie, along with Cairns, the young full-back Matthew Scott impressed as did energetic scrum-half Richard Snedden, while back-row Andrew Porter battled hard in a losing cause for Watsonians.
