Father and son to clash in Uni derby

NEIL IRVINE, Edinburgh University's 45-year-old assistant coach/player, could be lining up against his 19-year-old son, Jordan, when Edinburgh face Heriot-Watt University in the Central Taxis Premier Division at Peffermill tomorrow, kick-off 2.30pm.

This historic occasion is certainly on the cards as Neil is almost guaranteed to start with more than 160 appearances for Edinburgh, while son Jordan has also been a regular for Heriot-Watt this season. Both are competitive, no-nonsense midfield players to ensure that the scene is set for this unique contest.

"Personally speaking, this will be a fantastic occasion, not just for Jordan and me but also my father Norrie, who has been so influential in both our careers in football," said Neil. "He has supported me all of my life and also Jordan since he was a wee boy.

"Jordan and me will probably play against each other in the centre of the park and I can guarantee that our style of play will not change. Out there on the pitch there will be no father and son relationship - to me, Jordan will be just another player in the Heriot Watt team.

"There have been a few wind-ups in our house this week with my wife and daughter saying that they are supporting Jordan, while my dad is just proud that he is about to witness this.."

Edinburgh have Michael Gray and James Brownie unavailable which means that Tom Archer and Colin Cameron come into contention.

Michael Renwick, the Heriot- Watt head coach, said: "We are looking forward to this derby game and we are going to Peffermill intent on winning all three points." Lars Berger has returned from Norway to give Renwick a full squad to choose from.
