East of Scotland League: Spartans suffer own-goal agony

STIRLING University beat Spartans 2-1 in the Central Taxis Premier Division with a dramatic own goal by central defender Neil McCuish in the second minute of stoppage time.

Liam Corr had fired the students ahead with a superb left-foot drive midway through the first half. Spartans equalised ten minutes before the break when Gary Cennerazzo, scored his first goal for Spartans, with a low 16-yard shot. With only seconds remaining, Corr lifted a speculative ball into the Spartans penalty box where McCuish, in trying to clear, sliced the ball off the outside of his left foot. The ball then rolled tantalisingly behind Chris Flockhart and into the net to reduce Spartans’ advantage over Stirling University at the top of the league to five points.

First Division Leith Athletic beat Hawick Royal Albert 4-1 with goals by Kyle Boggie, Craig Hume, Neil Lowson and Chris Beaton. Bobby Nwanze scored a consolation goal for Hawick.
