East of Scotland: Own goal seals Welfare win

Whitehill Welfare needed an own goal from Leith Athletic’s Steven Lynch with only four minutes of extra time remaining to earn the Rosewell club a 3-2 win and earn them a place in the third round of the SFA South Region Challenge Cup.

Stephen Barrie had given Leith an early lead, cancelled out by Dayne Robertson, before Wayne McIntosh edged Whitehill ahead. Gavin Tainsh equalised before Leith conceded that late own goal. Spartans also needed a late goal five minutes from time from hat-trick hero Gavin Malin to see them win 4-3 against Lothian Thistle. Robbie Manson also scored for Spartans with Lothian’s goals coming from Jamie Hawkins, Omar Ali and Craig Stewart.

Edinburgh City beat Burntisland Shipyard 3-1, Vale of Leithen were 4-2 winners at Heriot Watt University, Stirling University beat Edinburgh University 3-2, Selkirk won 2-0 against Kelso United 2-0, Eyemouth United beat Peebles Rovers 3-2 and Duns thumped Hawick Royal Albert 10-0.
