Hamilton 2 - 3 Ayr United: Smith the hero as Ayr cap remarkable comeback

MIDWEEK League Cup goal hero Chris Smith came up trumps again as Ayr snatched a remarkable last-minute winner to move off the foot of the table and spark calls from the home fans for the removal of Accies manager Billy Reid.

On the back of their memorable cup win over St Mirren, Ayr would have been hoping to build on their exploits with another clean sheet, but they went behind after 17 minutes when Paul Currie scored from what seemed a very soft-looking penalty award.

Stung into action, Ayr began creating the better chances, although it was Accies who struck again as Greig Spence flashed home a brilliant header to send the home team in at the break with a two-goal advantage.

It looked to be a long way back for the visitors, but they were level before the hour mark as Michael Moffat punished some lax defending with a smart finish, and John Robertson tucked home a quickly-taken free kick to deservedly level matters.

Both teams had chances, but it was Ayr who grabbed a winner inside stoppage time with Smith heading home his second priceless goal of the week.
