Mark McGhee sacked by Bristol Rovers

MARK McGhee was sacked as Bristol Rovers manager yesterday, a little more than an hour after his side lost 4-1 to League 2 rivals York City.

It was Rovers’ eighth loss in ten games and plunged them into the relegation zone of England’s bottom league, prompting McGhee’s dismissal less than a year after his arrival.

The Scot saw his side ship four goals in the first 33 minutes, including an own-goal by former Dundee United defender Garry Kenneth.

McGhee, 55, who was on the short-list for the Scotland job five years ago and was interviewed for the Celtic manager’s post in 2009, signed former Scotland strikers Derek Riordan and David Clarkson for Rovers.
