The gym and food regime Scott Wright has gone on to bolster Rangers chances

Scott Wright was doing all the right things on the park to earn a move to Rangers – now he’s doing everything right off the pitch in order to excel at Ibrox.

The winger’s weight gain since his January transfer is well documented – he bulked up four kilograms inside a month as Steven Gerrard sought to add strength to his speed – and Wright has admitted he’s even heavier now after daily gym sessions and a tailored nutrition plan.

After a series of impressive substitute appearances he’s hoping that adds weight to his argument for a first start against Cove Rangers on Sunday evening.

“I set myself a wee target when I came, a set goal to try and do my best with the minutes I was given, whether that was from the bench or hopefully a start at some point,” he said. “It’s not going to be given to me, I need to make sure I work hard for it and if I do get the minutes I need to do something with it and give the manager something to think about for the next game.”

He’s impressed in those 94 minutes he’s accumulated over seven games, but also in the gains away from the pitch too, which have involved “eating right and living right” to accelerate his progress.

“We’ve managed to get [my weight] up a wee bit more now from the initial four kilos I put on. That’s ideal because I knew it was a weakness when I came to the club. There are some fantastic coaches here who have helped me get to my target. It was a case of eating right and living right.

“I have been doing a lot of work in the gym. After every session I am in there and while it’s been hard, it’s an area I knew I needed to work on.

“I needed to add it to my game, and I don’t want to put too much on and take away from other aspects such as my speed, but it’s something we were working on when I was at Aberdeen. Coming to Rangers, I’ve been able to maintain it.

“I sat down with the nutritionist when I came in. The chefs put on great food for us and that obviously helps me as well. It’s just a case of trying to eat as much as possible and making sure I am doing the right things off the pitch as well.”

Steven Davis and Allan McGregor, who have both signed new contracts at Ibrox, have also been a sounding board for Wright, in that respect, able to impart advice off the field as well as driving on the team to league success on it.

“They know what it entails to be a Rangers player – on and off the pitch,” he added. “For someone like me to come in with not as much experience, it’s great to be able to pick their brains a wee bit.

“Football is a game of highs and lows, so when you get a high a like winning the league you want to get it again and it becomes a bit of an obsession - hopefully the Cup can be something for us.”
