Heriot's 34 - 17 Dundee HSFP: Clinical Heriot's prevail

Heriot's coach Bob McKillop was justifiably well satisfied after his team's bonus-point victory in a match during which they struggled at times to exit their own half.

"Dundee had a lot of possession and we kept giving them the ball, but I thought our defence in the first and last quarter was excellent," he said. "The guys showed a lot of guts.

"We were determined to try to play with a bit of style."

Heriot's defensive work had to be top quality as they were subjected to long spells of pressure by Dundee, especially in the first period. However, the visitors had but a meagre penalty from Jamie Urquhart to a show for their efforts at the interval, with the home side comfortably ahead thanks to break-out tries from Graham Wilson and Cameron Ferguson, both converted by the former.

The Edinburgh men increased their advantage after the break with a Wilson penalty and second try from Ferguson for what looked an unassailable lead. However, Dundee battled back with Danny Levison crossing for a try that Urquhart goaled. Colin Goudie restored the home side's margin when he went over, but Urquhart again brought Dundee back within striking distance with a try he converted.

Goudie, though, provided the denouement when he was first to reach his own kick ahead for a score goalled by Wilson in the last play of a gripping encounter.

Dundee's Ian Rankin was understandably despondent at taking nothing from a game to which his side contributed in spades. "In the first half we probably had 70 per cent of territory and possession. It's frustrating - the guys put so much into this game. We scored two good tries and are disappointed that we didn't even get a bonus point."
