Anderlecht 1-1 Hibs 29 Sept 1992

A SPLENDID performance was insufficient to console Hibs in the Constant Van Den Stock Stadium as the Easter Road side were eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Anderlecht on the away goals rule.

Darren Jackson's equaliser cancelled out Luc Nilis's strike but it was not enough to alter the course of a first-round tie which was lost in the first leg at Easter Road when Anderlecht scored twice in a 2-2 draw.

A cool and influential performance from Neil Orr in central defence and lively contributions from Jackson and Keith Wright up front were instrumental in denying Anderlecht, who had won three European trophies in the previous 20 years, victory on their home patch.

The second leg was a tremendously exciting contest which provided a dramatic closing phase. Anderlecht knew that a 1-1 draw was good enough to take them through.

Degryse, the Belgians' highest-paid player, was involved at the start of Anderlecht's first coherent move, which brought them the lead after five minutes. De Wolf made the running down the left, Van Vossen held the ball up in the box and Luc Nilis rifled a low shot past the unsighted John Burridge.

Only over-elaboration by Van Vossen prevented the Belgians from increasing their lead. After such a slack start, Hibs hauled themselves back into contention with a well-taken equaliser after 18 minutes. Tortolano played the ball in from the left, Brian Hamilton gathered it at the far post before squaring to Jackson, who beat De Wilde from eight yards.
