Hibs must show new manager what they can do against Dons - Liam Miller

LIAM MILLER believes the next few weeks will be a steep learning curve for Hibs' players as they get to know their new boss and his approach to the game.

But the midfielder insisted he and his team-mates must learn some lessons quickly from Colin Calderwood if they are to come away victorious from Pittodrie tomorrow afternoon.

The Easter Road side travel north to take on Mark McGhee's Aberdeen in the lunchtime kick-off and the game will be Calderwood's first in charge since being appointed manager at the beginning of the week.

With just a few short days between his unveiling on Monday night and the game against the Dons, Calderwood, pictured right, has his work cut out to make his mark on the team in time for kick-off tomorrow.

But Miller believes that the Hibs players have already begun to take on board the advice and instructions imparted by the former Spurs defender. Miller said: "We will give it our best shot to do everything we can for the new gaffer, it is still early doors, but we have had a few sessions with him now going into the game against Aberdeen and we need to show in the game tomorrow that we have taken everything on board that he has said to us.

"We need to show a real eagerness on the pitch and if we can do that, then I think that is half the battle.

"I would say that he is an approachable guy and you can see that he is getting his points across early doors, in terms of what he wants each player to be doing.

"From our point of view, it is important that we take that on board and learn from the experience that he has obviously got. He was a defender as a player so he has touched on a few different things in that kind of area, of course. Everyone knows that if you can keep it tight at the back that you have got a good chance in any game. That's not just down to the back four though, it's about the whole team, we need to defend from the front. It's still early doors but hopefully we can all pick a few things up and learn from him and what he wants us to do."

The Easter Road side face a stiff test over the course of the next few weeks, travelling to face Aberdeen at noon tomorrow and then hitting the road again next week for Dundee United at Tannadice.

The following weekend Calderwood will make his home bow in the first Edinburgh derby of the season and then just a few days later take on Rangers in a midweek clash at Ibrox.

The Irishman said: "We will just take it one game at a time right now. We know that Aberdeen is going to be an extremely tough game for us, we have prepared well for it though, we've looked at them on the video anaylsis and we've worked on a few things in training as well. The players know themselves what to expect going up there and hopefully we can put in a really good performance at Pittodrie."

Miller was gutted to see old boss John Hughes leave earlier this month, having struck up a good working and personal relationship with the former Falkirk boss.

The Irishman was training with clubs in his home country when he was left without a club after the transfer window closed in August last year and called Hughes up to alert him to the fact that he was available on a free transfer and offer his services to Hibs.

Hughes jumped at the chance to bring a player of Miller's experience to Hibs and the midfielder will always be grateful for the chance to kick-start his career again.

The Easter Road side have now had 12 managers - including caretaker bosses - over the course of the last 12 years and Miller, for one, is hoping that Calderwood can stick around for the long term.

He continued: "Personally I was gutted myself when he left. I suppose to a certain extent it is part and parcel of football, but you don't like to see anyone leaving.

"He was great to me when he was here and I spoke with him after he had gone to wish him all the best and he did the same with me.

"Having said all of that though, I am looking forward to working with Colin Calderwood and it will be interesting to see how things develop.

"It would be nice if the manager could come in a stay for a period of time because there have been a few changes over the last few years at the club. Hopefully we can get ourselves back up the league now, we got our first win last week against Kilmarnock but we have got to go out this weekend and make sure that we build on that, get a few more good results to go with it."

Having been part of the Hibs side which failed to record a home win in more than seven months, Miller admitted that he and his team-mates felt a sense of responsibility over Hughes' departure from the club.

That run of results at Easter Road played a massive part in Hughes leaving Hibs after 16 months in charge and Miller conceded that there was part of him that wished his old manager had still been in charge for the win over Kilmarnock that finally ended their drought.

"We tried loads of times to get that win for John," he said, "but, for whatever reason, we just couldn't do it no matter how hard we tried.

"Luckily enough for us, we got it on Saturday, but we had to work very hard for it. We probably ground it out more than anything else, I don't think that it was the best performance we have put in this season but the most important thing for us was getting all three points."

Calderwood has given assurances that both Gareth Evans and Alistair Stevenson will be needed at the club under his regime and Miller revealed that the Hibs players had been impressed by the caretaker duo's approach to both the game against Killie and the training sessions."When Alistair and Gareth took over they were great with the lads, it's all down to the way that you conduct yourself, and I think that every single one of the boys enjoyed working with them like that.

"Everyone was disappointed that the manager had gone but, at the same time, you have to allow the club to move on and those two did a great job.

"They really played a big part in the win over Kilmarnock." Defender Chris Hogg's return to the starting line-up against the Rugby Park side proved pivotal in Hibs' victory, the club skipper heading home both of Hibs goals in the first half of the game.

Miller would love to add his name to the scoresheet, having last netted in the 3-2 win over Motherwell at Fir Park in the first league game of the season.

But he insisted that he doesn't care who scores, only that Calderwood's side come away with the points: "Hoggy got a couple of goals last week, which maybe doesn't happen all that often.

"If it happens for me this weekend, then that's great but if not, I don't care who scores, just as long as we get the right results."
